Mia & Cynthia’s Portraits

I shot these as part of a general assignment for my Documentary Photography class this semester. I had so much fun roaming the familiar grounds of Medfield State Hospital with my sister Cynthia and her friend Mia!

I finally got to properly test out my new 50mm f/1.2 lens on this shoot! The depth of field is breathtaking. Even at f/1.2, the sharpness was incredible! I had also never tried using my flash outdoors along with natural light, but I am very glad I finally tried it out.

I didn’t really have a specific vision for this shoot. I just dived in headfirst, and went with the gentle energy of the day. In the moment, I captured Cynthia and Mia’s friendship and mostly let them do their thing :) The beautiful thing about doing shoots with people who have a connection of some sort is that I rarely have to direct or give them poses at all! My favorite photo (the first one) was very much a candid moment. After quickly taking my flash off my hot shoe and putting it away, I turned to find Cynthia and Mia in an embrace, and I rushed over to capture the sweet, quiet moment.

I got to play around a LOT with Photoshop too. The second I took the third photo below, I knew I had to transform it into a movie poster in post. Definitely turned into one of my favorite shots of the year so far, along with the first two images as well.

Enjoy!
